{"id":1972,"date":"2012-12-16T07:15:03","date_gmt":"2012-12-16T07:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tom-nan.com\/?p=1972"},"modified":"2012-12-16T07:15:03","modified_gmt":"2012-12-16T07:15:03","slug":"digitizing-vinyl-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/index.php\/2012\/12\/16\/digitizing-vinyl-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Digitizing Vinyl: Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the final part of a 3 part series on digitizing vinyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digitizing Vinyl: <a href=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/2012\/02\/digitizing-vinyl-part-1\/\">Part 1<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/2012\/12\/digitizing-vinyl-part1-a\/\">Part 1-A<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digitizing Vinyl: <a href=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/2012\/12\/digitizing-vinyl-part-2\/\">Part 2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So now we have a directory containing 10 MP3 files, 2 Audacity project files and 2 directories containing the Audacity raw data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"813\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image5-1.png?w=813\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3795\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MusicInbound directory is on my desktop.&nbsp; I use it to save music I\u2019ve imported from CD with iTunes and when I digitize vinyl.&nbsp; This particular directory is Linda Ronstadt\u2019s \u201cHeart Like A Wheel\u201d album, one of 12 albums I bought out of the 50 cent bin at Homer\u2019s in Omaha last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/dsc_0076-1.jpeg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3796\" title=\"DSC_0076\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this final part of the series we\u2019ll be tagging the MP3 files, adding an image of the album cover and adding info about the album to each track in the notes section of the mp3 tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picking up where we left off in Part 2:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open up MP3TAG and Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) and browse to your directory containing your MP3 files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image6-1.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3797\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drag all of the MP3 files over to MP3TAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"937\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image7-1.png?w=937\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3799\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select all files by hitting CTRL+A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter the Artist, Album, Year and Genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image8-1.png?w=375\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3800\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select Track01 and enter the Title and \u201c01\u201d for the track number.&nbsp; I do this in 2 digits so the tracks play in the correct order when I play them on my iPod or on WinAmp on my computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image9-2.png?w=362\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3801\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Repeat step 28 for each song on the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you need your Album Art.&nbsp; I download images of album covers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albumartexchange.com\">www.albumartexchange.com<\/a>. Just click on the gallery and do a search for the album art you\u2019re looking for. I usually use 600&#215;600 images\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image10-1.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3802\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case we\u2019re looking for Linda Ronstadt\u2019s \u201cHeart Like A Wheel\u201d album<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image11.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3803\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just click on the cover you want and you\u2019ll see it in the size you want. Just right-click on the album art and save as whatever you want to call it somewhere on your computer so you know where you can find it. I generally save it where the mp3 files it goes with are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"743\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image12.png?w=671\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3804\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close the browser and go back into MP3TAG and select all files by hitting CTRL+A (again).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right-click where the cover goes in MP3TAG and select Add Cover\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"665\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image13.png?w=665\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3805\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select the file you saved in Step 29 and click the Open button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your screen should have all of the files selected and the album cover image should show up in the box in MP3TAG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"937\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image14.png?w=937\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3806\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This step renames the files so that they can easily be identified on your hard disk.\u00a0 On the toolbar at the top of the window you\u2019ll notice near the menu a series of short-cut buttons. There\u2019s on that allows you to use the MP3 tags to name the file.\u00a0 Make sure all of your files are still selected (CTRL+A) and select the button to rename the files based on the tags:\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"34\" height=\"36\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image15-1.png?w=34\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3809\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A window will pop up allowing you to set the pattern for the filename:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"391\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image16-1.png?w=391\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3810\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use the pattern like I have in the \u201cFormat string\u201d box, the first song of the record I\u2019m working on gets renamed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLinda Ronstadt &#8211; Heart Like A Wheel &#8211; 01 &#8211; You&#8217;re No Good.mp3\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you hit the ok button the entire set of files representing the entire album will be renamed and the previous screen will come back showing the files with their new names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"937\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/tom-nan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image17.png?w=937\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3812\" title=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move the files to wherever you normally store your music.&nbsp; I keep mine on an archive drive. Each album gets its own directory.&nbsp; You can now load the music onto your iPod, iPad, Cell phone or wherever else you use to listen to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Important Note: <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Sharing this music once you\u2019ve converted it is still illegal under Copyright law&#8230;&nbsp; DON\u2019T do it!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the final part of a 3 part series on digitizing vinyl.
